Description
Hypoglycemia is the most serious and common adverse effect of diabetes therapy and is most common in patients taking insulin or sulfonylureas. The risk of hypoglycemia-related ED visits and hospitalizations is increased in those 75 and older and is associated with an increased risk of falls. The American Diabetes Association recommends de-intensification [A1C 7.5% – 8.5% ] for older patients at risk of falling due to hypoglycemia, such as those with multiple chronic illnesses, taking insulin, with cognitive impairment, or limited self-management skills.
